COVID-19, flu could be recipe for ‘perfect storm’ health professional warns

Doctors at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences say this year’s flu season could be one of the worst they’ve seen in a while.

Dr. Robert Hopkins says last year, UAMS saw low flu numbers. He says it was good for doctors in 2020, but could be the reason for a busy 2021.

this could also be the case due to more people are letting their guard down when it comes to taking precautions for COVID-19.

People were likely only able to avoid the flu last year because of COVID-19 causing people to be more aware of sickness and take more measures to protect themselves from getting sick.

With exposures to the flu not being experienced last year, our immunes systems have had time to relax and lose effectiveness. That combined with the decrease in precautious taken to protect against COVID-19 may cause the perfect environment for both diseases to cause a serious strain on the healthcare system.
